Ok, so I've been inspired by mosaic since I visited Grant's Tomb/ Riverside Park, New York City, in the 80's with my friend Thom. I visited it again this past Winter, and it is the most fabulous park full of community made mosaics. There are benches, arches, floors all mosaic-ed around the perimeter of the huge monument holding the tomb of Ulysses Grant, the 18Th president of the US.
Well, I'll post some of those pics another day, but today I've posted other sources of mosaic inspiration. They are pics from the absolutely amazing mosaics at Watts Towers in East LA. I saw them again this winter, and took a tour this time with my cousin, and son. They were more wonderful than the time I saw them "on the run", peeking through the fence, with my friend Gerry who was not so comfortable being in East LA after dinner. This time we actually got to see free live theatre happening right beside the towers! I have some amazing pics of that too....
The towers were built by one man, Simon Rodia. There are nine main sculptures, and the tallest one is 99.5' tall. He was a ceramicist, and he made them in his spare time, with simple tools, and broken ware from his jobs.
I have a mosaic rooster, made for my birthday, from my most special friend two years ago. Now, I will have a mosaic walk, soon. Made by me! My private tutoring will begin in May.
