WaTeRfaLL of WeAvinG

Ok, here is the weaving I wrote about the other day. It is seven metres long (7 x 39" for those not using metric : ). I took a weaving class this past winter, and weaved a small piece during the class. I made a longer warp and wove this at home with music, tranquility, and midnight hours. I took weaving 25 years ago, but didn't weave again until now. My weaving was beautiful back then, and I thoroughly enjoyed it, but it just didn't fit into my life in any meaningful way all these years. Now it fits. Not sure why. But who cares, it's right.

I had purses in mind as I did this weaving. I planned to weave sections for as many purses as I could get out of the warp. I measured a half way point, took notes about the yarn I used, how many passes (shots), how many inches (ok, I mix metric and imperial
), then I duplicated it for the other half of the purse (front and back). I have weaving for 9 purses from this warp. I will finish the purses with a combination of knitting, crochet, inkle loom weaving, or ??? hmm... I'm sure it will get interesting... very interesting, but not stupid. Ha ha! Who can name that show?

I built the frame with a fancy little mitre saw with my own little hands. I made a model out of popsicle sticks first, because although I have done woodwork, and used lots of tools, I don't really understand "sturdy" construction. I was happy with the way it turned out. My son helped me, and he learned about "sturdy" construction. ; )
It was displayed as an installation piece in a juried art show. I don't think many people understood it, but I was happy to show it. I sent my sister pics to NY and she thought it looked like a waterfall. I like that analogy. The waterfall of life.
This weekend (barring rain) it will be on display at the Victoria Fibre Art Festival. It may feel more at home there with all the other fibres. : )
Have a great night!
ciao
love as much as you can

Ok, I digress from weaving for a moment.

I volunteered at the door of the coffee house last night, so I brought paper and a pencil. I have had a mosaic path plan, brewing for about four years, and here it is mapped out. This will lead to the main door of my funky design studio. People will LOVE to walk over it on their way in. Hey, it's another reason to come by and see what goes on INSIDE my studio.

Now hopefully, my 86 year old friend still has the set of yellow, 1920's chipped dishes, available for me to nip up with the tile nippers! His dishes have been in the family since before he married his wife, of 63 years! The funky purple, 1" tiles, (with the metallic strands through them) that I collected, are here, and ready to go, as well as an eclectic collection of broken china, dishes, and beach glass. This is going to be fun! I will be indebted to my multi-talented friend Debra for her expert tutelage about mosaic!

Next time, I'll probably post something about fibre arts, clothing design, woodworking, or my recent trip to Watts Towers, in Los Angeles.
